Teacher Labour Action Update

What we know today:

School Boards Approve Teacher Lockout if Necessary

School Boards have voted to provide TEBA (Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association) Board of Directors with the authority to engage in a teacher lockout if necessary. This decision does not have an immediate effect on school operations. The vote will ensure School Boards have the ability to protect students and communities if the ATA initiates a work stoppage. TEBA is continuing negotiations on behalf of public, separate and Francophone school boards. We respect the bargaining process and remain hopeful that TEBA and the ATA will reach a settlement that is fair for all parties.

TEBA and ATA at Impasse in Negotiations

Both parties announced today that they have reached an impasse, so negotiations have been paused. It is hoped that the parties will return to the bargaining table soon. Schools remain open with no disruptions.

About the ATA

The ATA includes more than 46,000 certificated members across Alberta, including more than 300 who work for our Division. The ATA is divided into 55 local bargaining units. Its members include teachers, substitute teachers, assistant principals and principals.

TEBA and the ATA are at the Bargaining Table this Week

TEBA (Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association) and the ATA are engaged in bargaining this week with the assistance of a mediator. (August 26-29) It is our hope that these meetings will result in a fair agreement between the two parties.

As of today, we are still on track to welcome students to our schools on August 28 without disruption.

We will continue to update this page as information becomes available.

Planning for the 2025-26 School Year

In June, the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) reported that 94.5% of its members voted in favour of strike action. For now, our Division is continuing its planning for the first day of school on August 28. We recognize that uncertainty around potential labour action may be challenging for families. Any new information about potential labour action will be shared with families and posted to this page as soon as it is available.

What Happens Next?

If the ATA decides to commence labour action, the union must provide school boards with 72 hours’ notice.

The ATA has 120 days to commence labour action, unless a resolution is reached between the provincial government's Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) and the ATA.

We value the contributions of all employees who support student success, and we respect the provincial bargaining process.

Bargaining Process

Bargaining between TEBA and the ATA occurs at the provincial level. This means that items like teacher salaries are set through the provincial collective agreement, not through individual school boards. Local bargaining between our Board and ATA Local 42 can only commence once this process has been completed.

We hope that TEBA and the ATA can conclude the bargaining process as soon as possible so that a new collective agreement can be reached.
